What are Domain Name Registrars and How Do They Work?

When you buy domains , do you wonder about the mystery surrounding purchasing "invisible property" online? In this article, much of the mystery will be revealed. In the simplest terms, a Domain Name Registrar is a company that registers domain names for those who wish to own a domain name . To understand how a registrar functions, one must first recognize ICANN, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and their role in domain name registration.

ICANN has two major responsibilities. First, to oversee the Domain Name System (DNS) in order to validate the distribution of IP Addresses and domain names, confirming each one is unique. Overseeing the DNS also empowers ICANN to ensure every domain name maps to the correct IP Address. ICANN coordinates the distribution and mapping with each Registry. Second, ICANN is in charge of accrediting Domain Name Registrars. ICANN has specific criteria for Registrar accreditation. Once a Registrar is accredited, they sign a contract and agree to abide by ICANN's guidelines and procedures.

The next step in the reveal process involves the Registries. The Registry is the organization responsible for the actual administration and maintenance of a Top Level Domain (TLD). Domain Bank, Domain.com's registrar is licensed with the major domain Registries, including Verisign (.com and .net), PIR (.org), Afilias (.info), Neulevel (.biz), Neustar (.us), SITA (.aero), DotCOOP (.coop) and MuseDoma (.museum). A Registrar purchases domains from the Registries as the consumer requests them. Consumers may not register a domain name directly from the Registry; they must do so through a Registrar. Registries do charge Registrars for the registrations. Unrestricted TLDs such as: .com and .net have lower registry fees, while restricted TLDs such as: .aero and .museum, have much higher registry fees. Registrars also update the domain name at the corresponding Registry whenever a contact or DNS change is made.

Now, we proceed to the role of the consumer in the domain register process. The consumer finds a Registrar either by word of mouth, advertisements or through a search engine. Once at the Registrar's site, the consumer checks the availability of a domain name. The registrar communicates with the respective Registry to ascertain whether the requested domain name is available for purchase or already owned by another party. If the name is available, the consumer is able to register the domain.

During the domain register process, the customer enters contact information and DNS information for the domain name. The contact and DNS information that the customer provides is shared with the respective registry for the TLD(s) purchased. The Registry files the contact information for the whois. The Registry also adds the zone files to the root servers, which tell other servers how to find your site. Now, the update must propagate. Propagation is the amount of time required for a domain name's registration and/or changes to DNS information to be distributed throughout the Domain Name System.
